Be a Quitter!

Everyone loves a quitter — when it comes to quitting tobacco! Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the United States. Yet, more than 43.8 million Americans still smoke cigarettes. That is nearly one in every five adults.

The Great American Smokeout

Every year, on the third Thursday of November, smokers across the nation take part in the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout. This year, if you use tobacco, you can join millions of others and go tobacco free on Nov. 21, 2013.

The Great American Smokeout is your chance to join others and take the first step in quitting tobacco. Focus on this date to make a plan to quit, or plan in advance and then quit smoking that day.

Tips for Quitting

  • Ask your employer if you have a tobacco cessation program offered through your company health benefits.
  • If you don’t have a program through your benefits, stop-smoking hotlines are available in all 50 states. Call the American Cancer Society at 800-227-2345 to find telephone counseling or other support in your area.
  • When you get the urge to smoke, take a walk, go get a drink of water or play a game. Try playing the Zombie Smokeout mobile game available for iPhone, iPad and Android to help those cravings!
